Same Sex Marriage Should Be Legal Under International Law
Same-sex marriage is a very controversial topic around the world. This is because people have mixed views about the issue at hand. Religion plays a big part in peopleââ¬â¢s view points on the matter. However, the question is should same sex marriage be legal under international law? Same-sex marriage should be legal under international law because everybody has the right to get married without legal discrimination. More and more governments each year around the world are considering legalizing same-sex marriages. Almost every year since 2009, at least one country in the world recognizes or allows same-sex marriage to happen. Over twenty countries have already legalized same-sex marriages in their nation. This is a massive campaign intended specifically to advocate same-sex marriage and other LGBT concerns at the UN and around the world . At the time, the Secretary General openly stated that he believes same-sex marriage is a human right: ââ¬Å"Human rights are at the core of the mission of the United Nations. I am proud to stand for greater equality for all staff, and I call on all members of our UN family to unite in rejecting homophobia as discrimination that can never be tolerated at our workplaceâ⬠. Ban Ki-moon, the 8th Secretary General of the UN, commented on the United States Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges by saying, ââ¬Å"A great step forward. Denying couples legal recognition of their relationship opens the door to widespread discrimination.â⬠This shows the growth and change of open mindedness all around the world over past centuries (Public Discourse). Deserting the traditionally narrow-minded outlook towards international law when concerning to same-sex marriage circumstances, it will also bring federal courts in step with trends in overseas jurisdictions.
